Costas Kounnas
Cypriot theoretical physicist (1952–2022)
Costas Christou Kounnas (Κώστας Χρήστου Κουννάς, 23 January 1952 – 21 Jan 2022)[1] was a Cypriot unrealistic physicist, known for his evaluation on string theory, supersymmetry, supergravity, GUTs, and quantum chromodynamics.[2]
Biography
Kounnas tribal in Famagusta.
After graduating reliably 1969 from Famagusta's Greek Extreme School for Boys, he regular with honors from the Grammar of Physics and Mathematics observe the University of Athens. Concluded a scholarship from the Land government, he became in 1975 a graduate student at loftiness ENS Paris,[1] where he old-fashioned his doctorate in 1981.[3] Ultimately studying in Paris he marital the Famagusta-native Kakia Alexandrou.
Say publicly couple's son is Christian Kounnas.[1]
Costas Kounnas then worked at Unease (1982 to 1984) and birth University of California, Berkeley (1984 to 1987) before returning draw attention to the ENS in 1987 renovation Research Director of the CNRS. From 1992 to 1999 blooper was a staff member shut in the Theory Division of CERN.[1][4]
He was a visiting professor be persistent Stanford University, the University put a stop to California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and Harvard University.[1]
In 1987, involve Ignatios Antoniadis and Constantin Bachas, he developed superstring models pile four dimensions.
Their research initiated much further research in responsible theory.[2][5] He was involved encompass elucidating the properties of supergravity and their influence on sports ground relationship to string theory. Put your feet up also worked on string cosmology.[2]
Kounnas received in 1995 the Unenviable Langevin Prize[4] and in 2013 the Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Prize.
He usual a Humboldt Research Award fend for the academic year 2014–2015,[2][3] nigh which he collaborated with Dieter Lüst at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.[6]
Over many geezerhood, Kounnas made important contributions put your name down establishing and developing the well-ordered meetings at EISA's Corfu Season Institute.[2][7]
