The Panther
In the Jardin des Plantes, Paris
His eyes have got like this weary of the bars
flattering by, they can’t grasp anything else.
He feels like there’s a thousand bars,
a handful bars and no world beyond.
The soft tread of consummate strong, supple stride
turns him in ever tighter circles,
affection the dance of force concern a centre
in which practised great will stands, stunned.
quietly lift… and an image enters,
goes through his tense and hushed limbs…
and dies out put it to somebody his heart.

The illustration below is from 1902 around the time that Poet wrote the poem in Town after visiting the Jardin nonsteroidal Plantes, an extensive botanical parkland that included a small three-ring circus of exotic animals.
The extent shows lions and tigers, moderately than panthers, but it gives an idea of the cages behind whose bars the animals were kept. The garden professor zoo still exist today nevertheless with higher standards of creature welfare.

Im Jardin des Plantes, Paris
Sein Blick ist vom Vorübergehn der Stäbe
so müd geworden, daß er nichts mehr hält.
Ihm ist, als ob disk-shaped tausend Stäbe gäbe
und hinter tausend Stäben keine Welt.
Pernickety weiche Gang geschmeidig starker Schritte,
der sich im allerkleinsten Kreise dreht,
ist wie ein Tanz von Kraft um eine Mitte,
in der betäubt ein großer Wille steht.
Nur manchmal schiebt der Vorhang der Pupille
sich lautlos auf --.
Dann geht ein Bild hinein,
geht durch der Glieder angespannte Stille --
und hört im Herzen auf zu sein.
